We were at the UK Space Applications networking event that took place on the 30th of January 2019 in London.
Gregor Petkovsek from HR Wallingford presented DAMSAT and how satellite applications can help to monitor tailings dams.
It was an excellent opportunity to share experiences with other space application developers , some of them also developing products for Peru, our pilot country.
We published a review of the risks posed by the failure of tailings dams in a report, available from our resources section.
This report provides
- an overview of risks associated to tailings dams,
- monitoring regulatory frameworks worldwide,
- current monitoring methods and techniques,
- examples of tailings dams failures, ranging from Val di Stava in Italy that occurred in 1985 until the most recent one in Sulliden Shauindo, Peru in 2018.
The report has a special section dedicated to Peru, where our product DAMSAT will be tested and applied.

Following the catastrophic failure of the Brumadinho tailings dam in Brazil, Craig Goff, our project director, considers the risks associated with these types of dam.
We have now chosen a new name for the system we are developing, it is called DAMSAT (DAm Monitoring with SATellites). DAMSAT will help to reduce the risk of tailings storage facilities and the consequent damages to population and ecosystems downstream.
Meet us at the UK Space Applications networking event that will take place on the 30th of January in London. Alex Murphy and Gregor Petkovsek from HR Wallingford will be attending the event.
It will be a great opportunity to share experiences with other space application developers, investors and funding bodies.
